Surviving Picasso (1996)
Country: US/GB
Technical: col 125m
Director: James Ivory
Cast: Anthony Hopkins, Natascha McElhone, Julianne Moore
Synopsis:
The story of Françoise Gilot, who survived being Picasso's mistress.
Review:
The minute you start casting well-known actors as Henri Matisse, things are bound to acquire an ersatz feel, and it takes more dramatic cogency than this can provide to turn a biopic into gripping cinema. Hopkins does good work, but McElhone never quite transcends her arresting beauty on screen.
