Sweat (2020)

£0.00

Country: POL/SV
Technical: col/2.39:1 106m
Director: Magnus von Horn
Cast: Magdalena Kolesnik, Julian Swiezewski, Aleksandra Konieczna

Synopsis:

Zumba motivator and social media influencer, Sylwia, is a national celebrity whose fans pore over her video posts and who goes nowhere without her phone. Then, one weekend when she is at an emotional low ebb, an incident occurs outside her flat that prompts her to reassess her need for personal contact.

Review:

Timely meditation on the pervasiveness of social media and the pressure on young women (particularly) to live up to an ideal: constant adjustment of makeup, wearing the right clothes, eating green, working out, etc. Using a single camera the director focuses on Sylwia almost exclusively, and Kolesnik is brilliant at the moments when self-possession slips. Tellingly, it is the moment shared with the overweight stalker that provides the emotional core of the film.
