Campion's plunge into the mores of Sydney 'white trash' made something of a splash back in 1989, when it established her as a director with the energy and humanity to deal with uncommercial subjects. If one were cynical one might add that they are much easier to do as a first feature; finding an audience to sit through them is another matter.
