Switchblade Romance (2003)

£0.00

(Haute Tension)

Country: FR/ROM
Technical: col/2.35:1 91m
Director: Alexandre Aja
Cast: Cécile de France, Maïwenn, Philippe Nahon

Synopsis:

A student with a crush on her best friend drives with her to spend a couple of weeks revising for their exams at the latter's family's converted farmhouse. However, on their first night they are terrorized by a garage mechanic in a rusting Citroen van who massacres the family and kidnaps the friend.

Review:

French cinema playing the Hollywood game and doing it better. The situations are more credible, the usual series of flippant set pieces replaced by a suspense-racking concentration on one character's predicament. The closing twist might strike you as the biggest fraud ever perpetrated on the suspecting horror film addict, though it is signalled early on and periodically thereafter. The ordeal is every bit as gruelling as in other examples of extreme French cinema, and both it and the acting surpass those of Hollywood equivalents.
