The Scarlet Letter (1995)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: Technicolor 135m
Director: Roland Joffé
Cast: Demi Moore, Gary Oldman, Robert Duvall, Edward Hardwicke, Joan Plowright, Roy Dotrice

Synopsis:

Seventeenth century New England, and a Puritan community welcomes the wife of a physician, only to spurn her when she befriends relatively profane Quaker women and, falling pregnant, refuses to identify the father (in fact the local minister).

Review:

Dire historical melodrama reminiscent of the more prurient elements of The Crucible. The production values are high, Barry's music appropriately adding another layer of bogus sentiment to the drama of the central characters, who lack both depth and chemistry. Quite what anyone thought they were about is a moot question: The Last of the Mohicans crossed with The Mission?
