£0.00

Country: SW/US
Technical: bw 104m
Director: Fred Zinnemann
Cast: Montgomery Clift, Ivan Jandl, Aline MacMahon, Wendell Corey, Jarmila Novotna

Synopsis:

In the aftermath of WW2 a Czech concentration camp evacuee escapes his Allied custodians and is found by an American soldier, who teaches him English and plans to take him back to the US. Meanwhile, the boy's mother walks from one centre to another in search of her child.

Review:

Absorbing but solemn reconstruction drama, a kind of optimistic Germany Year Zero, with an earnest MGM female narration that doesn't help the early stages. However, watching the growing trust of the boy and the faithful devotion of the women, it is hard not to be moved, and the performance of the young Jandl, newcomer Clift, and the others, are all truthful.
