The Secret in their Eyes (2009)
(El secreto de sus ojos)
Country: ARG/SP
Technical: col/2.35:1 129m
Director: Juan José Campanella
Cast: Ricardo Darín, Soledad Villamil, Pablo Rago
Synopsis:
A legal assistant at the public prosecutor's office develops an obsession with the case of a raped and murdered schoolteacher whose assailant is freed by the corrupted powers of the Dirty War years. Years later his memories of it are inextricably bound up with his then love for his superior, and he attempts to exorcise both by writing a novel.
Review:
At once an allegory of the need to re-examine the collective injustices of the decade 1974-83, and a meditation on memory, this poignant murder mystery draws on both film noir and comedy to provide trappings for what is in narrative terms a tender romance. A rich experience, therefore, which never once strikes a false note for all its diverse ingredients, but uses the faces - and eyes - of its actors to provide a continuous thread. Campanella directs with an eye for close-ups and an impressive use of editing to dart back and forth between time frames.
