The Siege at Red River (1954)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: Technicolor 86m
Director: Rudolph Maté
Cast: Van Johnson, Joanne Dru, Richard Boone, Milburn Stone, Jeff Morrow

Synopsis:

Confederate fifth columnists steal the parts of a new Gatling gun and attempt to smuggle them through Union lines by posing as travelling elixir hucksters.

Review:

Not really a siege film, and Red River isn't even mentioned, though there are some impressive Arizona exteriors for a B picture; for much of its length this plays as light comedy, with Johnson's wholesome 'bad guy' constantly teasing Dru's prim and proper nurse, while Stone acts as puckish second fiddle, attempting to undermine his CO's amorous prospects. Then Boone and Morrow arrive on the scene and it gets more interesting, though only a little. The long drawn out climactic attack on the fort is emblematic of the lack of imagination in the direction.
