The Sound of Music (1965)
Country: US
Technical: col/Todd-AO 172m
Director: Robert Wise
Cast: Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker
Synopsis:
In the months leading to the Anschluss a nun postulate goes to serve as governess at the house of a retired Austrian sea captain, and ultimately marries him.
Review:
A splendid mixture of locations, historic drama and a magical songbook made this one of the most popular musicals ever made, a trick Hollywood vainly tried to repeat for the next decade. It is quite simply the right blend of a number of key elements: sentiment, humour, a charming curmudgeon of a sea captain, a totally committed lead performance and the right tunes. The fact that it is also superbly mounted in a way Hollywood did best is but the icing on the cake: lighting, editing, choreography and blocking are all top notch.
