A fascinating but wilfully enigmatic political picture, which never explains why the father was willing to die for the anti-fascist cause but not to assassinate Mussolini. One is left with a contemplation of tarnished heroism, rather akin to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, but with the stylistic accoutrements of this most Byzantine of storytellers.
