The Spirit of the Beehive (1973)
(El Espíritu de la Colmena)
Country: SP
Technical: col 95m
Director: Victor Erice
Cast: Fernando Fernán Gómez, Teresa Gimpera, Ana Torrent
Synopsis:
1940, Spain: with the country reeling from the experiences of the Civil War, two sisters' sense of adventure and fascination with good and evil are piqued by a village screening of Whale's Frankenstein; but their parents are too preoccupied with their own affairs to guide them through their discoveries.
Review:
With Franco about to die this was an intensely political statement, while at the same time a very subtle one, about the stultifying effects of his rise to power. The beehive, at once a symbol of common purpose and of blind adherence to an uncaring régime, makes this one of the most ambivalent titles in world cinema.
