The St Valentine's Day Massacre (1967)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 99m
Director: Roger Corman
Cast: Jason Robards Jnr, George Segal, Ralph Meeker
Synopsis:
Capone eliminates his rivals in Prohibition era Chicago.
Review:
Watchable but it's all been done better elsewhere. Robards is okay but ill at ease in a role done much better by Steiger, Muni or even De Niro, and the violence is mostly perpetrated on the furniture since the hoods seem able only to fire at hip level rather than at the guys taking cover on the floor. There is a version of the baseball bat scene to feature later in The Untouchables, but generally the commentary finishes off any impression of something fresh being delivered.
