The Story of Qiu Ju (1992)

£0.00

Country: HK/CHI
Technical: col 100m
Director: Zhang Yimou
Cast: Gong Li, Lei Laosheng, Liu Peiqi

Synopsis:

In rural China a chilli grower's wife relentlessly pursues the village 'chief' through the grievance procedures for violently kicking her husband. But the apology she wants is not forthcoming.

Review:

Spanning the latter stages of the heroine's pregnancy and culminating in celebrations for the birth of her only (allowed) son, the film contains many implicit observations on the Chinese system: individual hope versus harsh reality. Interestingly, just as the justice system seems to be expeditious and administered by well-meaning officials, so it has to do less with the securing of the desired apology than with implacable adherence to policy.
