The Stranger (1946)
Country: US
Technical: bw 95m
Director: Orson Welles
Cast: Edward G. Robinson, Orson Welles, Loretta Young
Synopsis:
A war crimes investigator releases one Nazi death camp commandant in the hope that he will lead him to the mastermind of the final solution, in hiding in America under an assumed name. All he knows is that his quarry has a passion for clocks; his search leads him to a small Connecticut town whose church clock hasn't worked in years.
Review:
A cracking thriller for the first reel or so, full of noirish touches and barely drawing breath, the film settles into one of those small town tales à la Shadow of a Doubt, complete with eccentric characters (who will forget the indolent drugstore keeper, Mr Potter, who makes his customers get their own coffee and plays draughts with them for a 25 cent stake?) Minor Welles but superior to most, and a performance that anticipates the one he gave as Harry Lime.
