The Saga of Anatahan (1953)
(Anatahan)
Country: JAP
Technical: bw 90m
Director: Josef von Sternberg
Cast: Akemi Negishi, Tadashi Suganuma, Kisaburo Sawamura
Synopsis:
On a Pacific island during and after WW2, shipwrecked sailors regress to the most primitive of human states.
Review:
One of those fables about what it takes for civilized man to revert to his baser nature (cf. Genesis); the answer of course is woman. All this is narrated in an irretrievably portentous manner by Von Sternberg himself in this extraordinary collaboration. The physical effect of the island on the characters is unfortunately compromised by some rather blatant studio sets.
