The Shootist (1976)

Country: US
Technical: col/scope 100m
Director: Don Siegel
Cast: John Wayne, Lauren Bacall, James Stewart, Ron Howard

Synopsis:

An ageing gunman dying of cancer arrives in town for a second opinion, taking a room with a woman and her boy, who recognizes him. He spends his last weeks trying to teach the kid some wisdom about firearms, and finding a way to die with dignity.

Review:

A poignant swansong for this legendary star, who himself would succumb to cancer some three years later. The makers assemble some classic elements from movies past (Shane, The Tin Star, High Noon), not to mention some faces, and the results are a worthy epitaph, even though this was a role the Duke rarely, if ever, played.
