The Southerner (1945)
Country: US
Technical: bw 92m
Director: Jean Renoir
Cast: Zachary Scott, Betty Field, Beulah Bondi
Synopsis:
Cotton workers resolve to strike out on their own, but the elements and neighbours are against them.
Review:
An interesting film in that it combines French style with the American language and locations, the visual treatment not so much painterly as realistic. Reputedly this was the film of which its director said to one critic back home that it was 'plutôt du Jean Renoir', to be misinterpreted as 'du genre noir', giving rise to a whole new convenience label.
