The Structure of Crystal (1969)

(Struktura kryształu)

Country: POL
Technical: bw/1.37:1 74m
Director: Krzysztof Zanussi
Cast: Jan Myslowicz, Barbara Wrzesinska, Andrzej Zarnecki

Synopsis:

An industrial physicist from the big city goes to stay with his former student friend and his wife, a schoolteacher, in the country. The latter, who has not even learnt to drive, runs a weather station as a sinecure and continues to indulge his passion for physics in its theoretical applications.

Review:

In this incredibly subtle film, Zanussi contrasts the suave utilitarian, who tries to persuade his friend to rejoin life's race, with the boyish, enthusiastic idealist, who has no career plan but is happy just doing what he is doing. There is at the same time something cynical about the friend, who is divorced and flirts with the simple wife; if one were looking for a political dimension one might say that he has sold out to the State. He nevertheless relaxes and they have fun outside together, almost like children, laughing when the grandpa starts awake at a sudden forte in Beethoven's 7th. There is no doubt about whom we trust.
