Tavern Man (2012)
(O Tasqueiro)
Country: FIN/POR
Technical: col 14m
Director: Aki Kaurismäki
Cast: Ilkka Koivula
Synopsis:
In a small Portuguese town, the manager of an unassuming tavern seeks to broaden his menu and longs for a dancing date.
Review:
The director's minimalism is here reduced to one reel of non-action. Highlights include: mopping the floor without detergent or wringing, chopping cabbage for soup (ingredients, cabbage, salt and water) and getting haircut for putative encounter; no dialogue. If it weren't for the colour and storyboarding we would be in the company of Béla Tarr!
