Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (1969)
Country: US
Technical: col 97m
Director: Abraham Polonsky
Cast: Robert Redford, Robert Blake, Katharine Ross, Susan Clark, John Vernon
Synopsis:
Some time after the McKinley assassination, and just before the current president prepares to visit the area, an Indian hothead arrives back on the reservation after a spell in gaol. He reclaims his girl and makes off with her, pursued by a sheriff with mixed feelings and an angry posse.
Review:
The fate of the American Indian once he was confined to reservations is a subject rarely addressed by the cinema, and certainly not as sensitively as here. His suppressed rage is powerfully conveyed by Blake, Redford does extremely well in an underwritten part; Ross was, however, an unwise choice for the Indian girl, her 'blacking-up' sitting uneasily with the progressive flavour of the rest of the movie, including Clark's reservation warden, educated enough to be disgusted with her dependence on the Redford character and vainly trying to petition the president for the welfare of her charges. A thoughtful Western with fine unity of action, leading one to regret the sparse filmography of this director.
