Tess (1979)

£0.00

Country: GB
Technical: col/scope 180m
Director: Roman Polanski
Cast: Nastassja Kinski, Leigh Lawson, Peter Firth

Synopsis:

A Somerset farmer's daughter falls foul of the local squire and is spurned by her priggish new husband when he finds out.

Review:

A deeply depressing film which does not even have Ryan's Daughter's narrative sweep and fine acting, but does muster some beautiful compositions (Geoffrey Unsworth, Ghislain Cloquet) and one or two touches worthy of the director's sense of the macabre. (Kinski was Polanski's very young consort of the time and the film had to be shot in Normandy, doubtless because the French are more broadminded.)
