The Tall Men (1955)
Country: US
Technical: col/2.55:1 122m
Director: Raoul Walsh
Cast: Clark Gable, Jane Russell, Robert Ryan, Cameron Mitchell
Synopsis:
After the Civil War a pair of brothers from Texas turn outlaw to separate an ambitious northerner from his cash, but wind up going halves with him in a cattle drive venture from Texas to Montana. On the way south they pick up with a wagon train of prospectors and save a woman from Sioux attack; for the rest of the adventure they must compete for her affections, while she decides which kind of life - and what sort of man - she wants.
Review:
Extremely leisurely Grade 'A' Fox Western, which adds little to the cattle drive subgenre, but has an intriguing opener and impressive location footage in the Rockies and Durango. Despite his uncharacteristic behaviour early on, Gable naturally turns out to be the same Gable as always: straight-up, loyal, good-humoured yet prickly, and loving of the simple outdoor life. Russell, being Russell, is made to get out of wet things at least twice, bathe in tub and river, and wear a suffocatingly tight corset. She also sings a little, but this picture desperately needs the Hawks touch; Walsh can command an invigorating action sequence but is less adept with all the talk, and is not helped by the ultra-widescreen keeping the actors at arm's length.
