The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)
Country: US
Technical: DeLuxe/Panavision 113m
Director: John McTiernan
Cast: Pierce Brosnan, Rene Russo, Denis Leary, Faye Dunaway
Synopsis:
Wall Street financier Thomas Crown keeps himself amused by mounting an ingenious heist at the Manhattan art gallery, and then playing cat and mouse with the attractive insurance investigator who may or may not be his nemesis.
Review:
The setting and outcome from the original movie have changed, and we have Dunaway in a cameo role and variations on Legrand's immortal theme on the soundtrack. Otherwise this is as chic and sleek as the first version, except that we can view that one's artifice with nostalgic amusement. The rich boy stuff now seems frankly empty, and having a hero always too clever for capture does not make for suspenseful viewing. On the plus side the forty-something leads make the screen sizzle a little, and the gallery sequences are as well mounted as one would expect of this director. One of a number of Nineties remakes of relatively modern movies (cf. Cape Fear, The Getaway).
