The Teachers' Lounge (2023)
(Das Lehrerzimmer)
Country: GER
Technical: col/1.33:1 98m
Director: Ilker Çatak
Cast: Leonie Benesch, Anne-Kathrin Gummich, Rafael Stachowiak, Michael Klammer
Synopsis:
In her first post at a secondary school, principled Maths teacher Carla Nowak, who has bridled at a member of her class being singled out for the theft of some money from the staff room, sets a trap for the culprit by leaving her laptop camera on. The fallout from this decision, however, sets students and colleagues alike against her.
Review:
Shot in crystalline 4:3, and with jittery plucking and scraping on the soundtrack, this claustrophobic drama (we never leave the school for a breath of fresh air) succeeds in capturing a slice of professional life for an educator of the twenty-first century whose charges are only too aware of their rights. As she suffers the undeserved consequences of her own rectitude, we remember how irritated we were early on during the investigation of a student, who may after all prove to have been the perpetrator of a quite separate crime. Meanwhile, the student editors of the school magazine abuse the trust she placed in them and publicly hang her out to dry. One longs for bringing back the birch... small wonder we have a shortage of teachers.
