The Traitor (2019)
(Il traditore)
Country: IT/FR/GER/BRA
Technical: col 153m
Director: Marco Bellocchio
Cast: Pierfrancesco Favino, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Fabrizio Ferracane, Fausto Russo Alesi
Synopsis:
In the 1980s, when a Cosa Nostra soldier decamps to Rio de Janeiro, members of his family are liquidated by other capos. Arrested by the Brazilian authorities and extradited to Italy, he cooperates with a judge in Rome and testifies at the unprecedented Mafia trials that follow.
Review:
Francesco Rosi would have been proud: for all its length, this individual story from the headlines maintains its grip and by the end we are on side with a protagonist who, at some points in the past, has murdered people, as an epilogue justly reminds us. It is a mesmerising central performance, and Bellocchio does his country a service in putting on record so integral a part of its history so even-handedly, even if to begin with there are far too many names to take in to make sense of the killings that follow.
