Three Colours: Red (1994)

£0.00

(Trois couleurs: rouge)

Country: FR/SW/POL
Technical: col 99m
Director: Krzysztof Kieslowski
Cast: Irène Jacob, Jean-Louis Trintignant

Synopsis:

The lives of a part-time model and a student lawyer intersect many times but never more significantly than when they come into contact with that of a retired judge who listens to his neighbours' telephone conversations.

Review:

In 'fraternité', red, the colour of blood, is also that of a motivic backdrop to the model's chewing gum advertisement and the background to a lithograph of Dutch composer Van Budenmayer (see Blue). Once again coincidence and a forgiving, humanist attitude to morality (behaviour is dictated by circumstance) figure prominently in Kieslowski's scenario. The mise en scène, cinematography and scoring are sheer poetry and the leads vie with each other in giving truly affecting performances. Repeated viewings reveal unsuspected echoes and premonitions, some of which traverse individual films (the strap binding books together, for example).
