Three Monkeys (2008)

£0.00

(Üç maymun)

Country: TUR/FR/IT
Technical: col/2.35:1 109m
Director: Nuri Bilge Ceylan
Cast: Yavuz Bingol, Hatice Aslan, Ahmet Rifat Sungar, Ercan Kesal

Synopsis:

When a candidate for political office does a deal with his driver to take the blame for a hit and run incident, he sets in chain a tragic series of events involving the prisoner's wife and son.

Review:

Bilge's 'film noir' plot is given a new strangeness by his elliptical shooting style and supranatural flourishes. He uses bleached out faces in close-up and heightens the greens and reds; each setup is studied in its composition and camera movement rigorously planned. Those looking for a conventional psychological drama will chafe at the narrative lacunae and ambiguity here, but there is plenty to admire in performance, cinematography and direction, as well as a snipe at the institutionalised corruption implicit in the film's plot: we see what happens to the little people when the powerful use them for their convenience, and ultimately the victims pass the poison on through society.
