Thumbsucker (2005)

£0.00

Country: US
Technical: col 96m
Director: Mike Mills
Cast: Lou Taylor Pucci, Tilda Swinton, Vincent D'Onofrio, Vince Vaughn, Keanu Reeves

Synopsis:

A teenage boy sucks his thumb, much to the chagrin of his former footballer dad, and undergoes a transformation through a course of medication and involvement in debating, before turning instead to recreational drugs and finally deciding that thumbsucking isn't so bad after all.

Review:

Modish independent debut centred on a coming of age in a more or less closed community (cf. Donnie Darko, Garden State). The scenario eschews hollow dramatics and the supranatural but instead risks being simply tedious. However, the supporting cast makes up for an exasperating hero by having more than their fair share of quirks, not least Keanu Reeves's smoking dentist.
