Titane (2021)

£0.00

Country: FR/BEL
Technical: col/2.39:1 108m
Director: Julia Ducournau
Cast: Vincent Lindon, Agathe Russell, Garance Marillier

Synopsis:

A girl's lifelong fascination with automobiles leads her to the 'demi-monde' of bonnet dancing, while a titanium plate in her skull suddenly inspires homicidal behaviour and more besides... Meanwhile a commandant in the fire service vainly seeks something to replace his lost son.

Review:

One of those high-concept European horrors (Martyrs, Haute tension), in this case irresistibly recalling the world of David Cronenberg. The argument goes that nothing need be explained since the outlandish incidents only serve as metaphors for thematic content: she is incapable of love, except chromium plated, until she finds someone as damaged as she is; he desperately needs someone to love. On the way there are nods to gender politics (all the male characters are sex-obsessed or possessive), and it is undeniably well made, but the repellent detail will be too much for most.
