To Joy (1950)
(Till Glädje)
Country: SV
Technical: bw 98m
Director: Ingmar Bergman
Cast: Maj-Britt Nilsson, Stig Olin, Margit Carlqvist (playing another of the director's vicious nymphomaniacs), Victor Sjöström (as the conductor)
Synopsis:
A mediocre violinist in a provincial orchestra marries another musician, but bitterness and self-absorption prevent him from enjoying life until it is too late.
Review:
Another slice of misanthropy from the maestro, his lead character treating those around him with utter contempt, his excuse being that he is unfulfilled and unexceptional. It's a tough call to make this kind of material watchable, but as usual his actors are so good that you cannot help but root for their characters in their self-inflicted misery, unless of course you are piously self-satisfied yourself. Added interest comes from the extended sequences of rehearsal, from the Egmont Overture to the Bartered Bride, which are well shot and edited, even if there is a signal absence of direction from the podium as to what exactly needs improving! The closing Ode to Joy is a less happily synched montage, and a rather trite conclusion.
