To Kill a King (2003)

£0.00

Country: GB/GER
Technical: Technicolor/scope 102m
Director: Mike Barker
Cast: Dougray Scott, Tim Roth, Olivia Williams, Rupert Everett, James Bowlam, Corin Redgrave

Synopsis:

After the Battle of Naseby General Lord Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell attempt to impress upon the King the need to sign a treaty reaffirming his responsibilities regarding his people. On their failing to do so, the reforming zeal of the one confronts the more radical designs of the other and their friendship suffers accordingly.

Review:

Absorbing political intrigue distinguishes this treatment of a subject dealt with in more spectacular fashion elsewhere. The performances are first rate, the facts still somewhat fancifully embroidered (there is no evidence Fairfax plotted Cromwell's assassination, for example) but in spirit true to history, and the general mise en scène adds up to a satisfying picture, à la Elizabeth, of what Britain must have been like back then.
