Toni Erdmann (2016)
Country: GER/ÖST/SW/ROM
Technical: col 162m
Director: Maren Ade
Cast: Sandra Hüller, Peter Simonischek, Michael Wittenborn
Synopsis:
Fifty-something piano teacher never gets to see his jet-setting consultant daughter; so when his dog dies he gets on a plane to Bucharest and pays her an impromptu visit. Fighting for a space on her busy agenda as she pays court to a new account, he decides not to return home but remain in her shadow as a fictional business guru-cum-German ambassador, Toni Erdmann.
Review:
Rather than simply being another deadpan, surreal Austrian comedy, this is a poignant comment on our globalised age, when we barely leave ourselves time to live and appreciate the world around us. It might come across as naïve to some, and is certainly in need of a fine edit, but it resonated with the critical public at the time.
