Tove (2020)
Country: FIN/SV
Technical: col 103m
Director: Zaida Bergroth
Cast: Alma Pöysti, Krista Kosonen, Shanti Roney
Synopsis:
Tove Jansson, daughter of a famous sculptor, aspires to be an artist in her own right, but it is ultimately her Moomin cartoons which attract the greater interest. Meanwhile her love life, though she flirts with convention, is centred on the person of Vivica Bandler, a theatre director whose promiscuity causes her much unhappiness.
Review:
Thematic biopic, focusing on the two chief aspects of its subject's life and career, and all the better for it. Scenes and passages are not bound by formal commonplaces but proceed organically from Tove's passionate and steadfast character. Period is well caught but does not dominate a glowing central performance.
