(Un fauteuil pour deux)

Country: US
Technical: col 116m
Director: John Landis
Cast: Eddie Murphy, Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Denholm Elliott

Synopsis:

Two senior Philadelphians, brothers and partners in an established firm of commodity brokers, make a bet over whether breeding is more important than environment. Before long, their hapless executive finds himself on the street, and a smalltime con artist in his place.

Review:

What in the 80s counted for narrative discipline, though there is an ounce or two of fat to trim in places, Landis's amalgam of comedy tropes stands up well thanks to sharp writing and an amiable cast. It could almost be termed high-concept, were it not for its illustrious antecedents in Shakespeare, Molière and Beaumarchais. However, it did seize on the defining asset of its era: money, even if the satire is decidedly blunt-edged: mammon remains securely ensconced in his seat of omnipotence at the film's close.
