Transcendence (2014)

£0.00

Country: GB/CHI/US
Technical: col/2.35:1 119m
Director: Wally Pfister
Cast: Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Kate Mara, Cole Hauser

Synopsis:

A world expert in artificial intelligence aspires to create a truly sentient computer, but is targeted by luddite extremists who inadvertently render his dream possible by killing him.

Review:

First rule of science fiction: even if your science is pseudo-science, make sure the layman can understand it. This over-ambitious, technologically gimmicky journey into the 'matricization of the globe by internet' loses us within minutes and expects us to accept that humankind would reject a cure to all diseases and the revival of endangered environments in order to enjoy the privilege of being human in a perpetual internet blackout. For want of one good dramatic scene, there isn't even much for the actors to do except look as though they wished they were somewhere else, though Hall does at least get the Scarlett Johansson lighting and makeup treatment.
