Trapeze (1956)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 105m
Director: Carol Reed
Cast: Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis, Gina Lollobrigida
Synopsis:
In the febrile atmosphere of the big top, two men compete for the love of one woman.
Review:
Lancaster delivers a splendidly intense, tortured performance with his cane and all, having been injured in a fall previously, his masculinity compromised. La Lolla's sudden dismissal of her ambitions for love at the end is hardly convincing, however; but then alas it is hard to tell Gina doing the deceitful schemer from Gina doing the agonised lover. Much of the film follows similarly melodramatic channels, underlined by Arnold's overwrought score. Despite all this it is a semi-success, and definitely worth a look.
