Trash (2014)
(Desechos y esperanza)
Country: US/BRA
Technical: col/2.35:1 114m
Director: Stephen Daldry, Christian Duurvoort
Cast: Rickson Tevez, Wagner Moura, José Dumont, Rooney Mara, Martin Sheen
Synopsis:
In the slums of Rio de Janeiro, a boy working the rubbish tips finds a wallet containing money, and more besides. Together with his two friends he unlocks the puzzle of the message left in the wallet by its owner, the mayor elect's right hand man, but the police are closing in, and will stop at nothing.
Review:
Like a neo-realist tale penned by Dan Brown, this thriller drama also resembles Slumdog Millionaire in its colourful and kinetic use of location shooting, as well as more obviously in its plot dynamics. The child actors are magnificent; one senses Mara and Sheen are there to secure Universal funding, though their roles, particularly hers, are essential to the narrative. There may be a touch of wish fulfilment in some of the details, Pia's survival in the cemetery for example, but given the undoubted logistical demands of the shoot and laudable sentiments enshrined in the story, next to Fast & Furious 5, one would be hard-pressed to think of a better reason to make a movie.
