Tread Softly Stranger (1958)
Country: GB
Technical: bw 90m
Director: Gordon Parry
Cast: Diana Dors, George Baker, Terence Morgan, Patrick Allen
Synopsis:
Unable to pay his debts, a gambler returns to his roots in the industrial north to lie low. However, he finds his brother in thrall to a nightclub hostess and robbing his employer to finance his courtship of her.
Review:
Archetypal story of happy-go-lucky elder brother balanced by loser kid brother, with femme fatale transferring her affections from one to the other like the nags George Baker's character bets on. It's your standard British noir setup, with post-war spivery and deprivation rubbing shoulders with Dors' special brand of Van Doren/Bardot lusciousness. She is at her best here, in both senses, and gets top billing, although Morgan's snivelling guiltiness is a little hard to take, removing any suspense over whether they will be caught. Rotherham locations similarly alternate with a rooftop set connecting the garret lodgings, and Parry contrives some dynamic low-angle shots for the nocturnal stealing about.
