Triangle of Sadness (2022)
Country: SV/FR/GB/GER/TUR/GR/US/DK/SW/MEX
Technical: col/2.35:1 147m
Director: Ruben Östlund
Cast: Harris Dickinson, Charlbi Dean, Woody Harrelson, Zlatko Buric, Dolly De Leon
Synopsis:
A couple of young models win a holiday on a luxury yacht captained by a dipsomaniac and staffed by a committed crew eager to acquiesce to every whim of its super-rich clientèle.
Review:
The director's second Palme d'Or winner in a row is another comedy of the absurd that confronts certain élite members of society with their dependence on the employee hierarchy and finds them wanting. It also targets the fashion industry and its naïve workforce of aspiring influencers, who are at least seen to grapple with ethical decision making during the course of the story. It is all far too long and loses its way in an uproarious scene of rough seas and vomiting that recalls the excesses of Eat the Rich and Monty Python's Meaning of Life. The final third on the desert island then seems to fork off into an I'm a Celebrity parody before closing with wilful ambiguity. That said, the film is far too intelligent and well made not to provide entertainment along the way, its title referring to the centre of a furrowed brow: as in Turist, our greatest peril would appear to be complacency.
