Triple Agent (2004)
Country: FR
Technical: col 115m
Director: Eric Rohmer
Cast: Katerina Didaskalu, Serge Renko, Cyrielle Claire
Synopsis:
A White Russian in exile in Paris between the wars has a Greek wife suffering from the effects of incipient bone cancer, and both are very much in love with each other, or so it would seem. When his revulsion at the flirting of his associates with Nazi Germany brings him into renewed contact with a Soviet Russia eager to rebuild her general staff after the purges, her initial doubts and fears for their safety are transmuted to suspicion of him and his new loyalties. Is he ready to sacrifice his integrity to get her the medical care she needs?
Review:
Characteristically tortuous and exhaustively mapped sentimental journey through the political underworld of 1930s Paris. There are scenes in the director's best style, where dialogue reveals inner thoughts as surely as it attempts to conceal them. The conclusion recalls that of L'Anglaise et le Duc, and will shock many with its abruptness, like Hitchcock's removal of Janet Leigh in the shower of the Bates motel.
