Triple Cross (1966)
Country: GB/FR/GER
Technical: col/1.66:1 140m
Director: Terence Young
Cast: Christopher Plummer, Romy Schneider, Gert Frobe, Yul Brynner, Trevor Howard
Synopsis:
A charming safecracker before the war is finally caught and imprisoned on Jersey. Through sheer brass neck effrontery he convinces the Germans that he would be far more use to them working as a secret agent. There begins a game of cross and double cross, whereby he becomes the only Englishman ever to be awarded the Iron Cross.
Review:
Based on the actual story of Eddie Chapman, Hardy and Young's treatment leans towards the comedy thriller in tone: there is no bloodshed, and rarely any sense of danger that Plummer does not bluff his way out of. All of which is rather at odds with the biopic-sized length; the timescale also is awkward: we seem to skip through the war at astonishing speed, with him barely accomplishing one mission for the Jerry and one for the Brits. Nevertheless, Plummer and Frobe particularly make it tremendous fun, and this was perhaps the only film in which the Canadian played a traditional leading man role.
