Triumph of the Will (1935)

(Triumph des Willens)

Country: GER
Technical: bw 114m
Director: Leni Riefenstahl
Cast: Adolf Hitler, Rudolf Hess, Hermann Göring, Josef Goebbels

Synopsis:

A record of the Sixth Nazi Party Congress, held at Nürnberg in 1934 and designed by Albert Speer.

Review:

A problematic film when it comes to admiration, of course, but there is no denying the jaw-dropping effect of so many thousands standing or marching in harmony, all the more since the knowledge of what was to come underlies the mere spectacle of the images. At the same time it is fascinating to see these demagogues and crooks closeup and cocksure, just as it is to view the medieval roofs of Nuremberg before their obliteration. However, while there are moments which self-consciously recall Eisenstein on the editing front (the shots of different Nazi eagles, for example) generally there is a lack of restraint, with whole sequences of marchers going on far too long, mirroring the horrendous self-indulgence of the whole event. The closing indoor rally justly ranks as one of the most famous pieces of documentary footage ever created, nevertheless.
