True Grit (1969)
Country: US
Technical: col 128m
Director: Henry Hathaway
Cast: John Wayne, Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, Jeff Corey, Robert Duvall
Synopsis:
A feisty young country girl hires a federal marshall to track down the man who killed her father, but a Texas Ranger also wants the man, for a different offence.
Review:
Best known, and most savourable, for Wayne's 'let it all hang out' performance as a whisky-toting lawman, this typically slovenly Hathaway opus begins most unpromisingly with a dreadful title song and flat cinematography that makes it look like a TV movie. However, once we go on location things pick up some, the characters are engaging enough, even the bad guys, and it works up to three memorable set pieces.
