Truman (2015)
Country: ARG/SP
Technical: col 108m
Director: Cesc Gay
Cast: Ricardo Darín, Javier Cámara, Dolores Fonzi
Synopsis:
A man travels from Canada to Madrid to visit his friend, dying of cancer, for the last time. Over four days he helps him tie up loose ends, including what to do about his dog Truman, but basically just spends time with him.
Review:
Knowing nothing of the central relationship to start with, the viewer must piece together the essentials. This is a film in which nothing happens (in a sense), but in which everything is contained, as Julián says at one point: 'Las relaciones son todo'. The silences between the friends, the way Tomás gives his time, his ears - his money - his support, to the extent of being reproached for it by Paula, all speaks volumes. It is an end-of-life film which dwells on none of the pain and indignity of dying, but is all about preparing mentally for what is to come. And Truman in all that? Not to spoil it, but you will probably guess before you get there.
