Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988)
Country: US
Technical: col/scope 115m
Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Cast: Jeff Bridges, Joan Allen, Martin Landau
Synopsis:
The trials and triumphs of a visionary who more than anyone was responsible for safety features being incorporated into American car manufacture.
Review:
An outstanding film in a year of dross from America, this vanity project went largely unnoticed at the box office. A breathtaking example of Coppola's smoothly professional style, with his lighting, staging and transitional effects, it is first off an immaculate production, but also a film about recognisable, ordinary folks trying to do some good. Landau is terrific as Uncle Abe, Dean Stockwell turns in a cameo as Howard Hughes, and despite the downbeat subject matter (safety is costly) this is a delight.
