Yella (2007)
Country: GER
Technical: col 89m
Director: Christian Petzold
Cast: Nina Hoss, Devid Striesow, Hinnerk Schönemann
Synopsis:
Yella obtains a new job in a nearby town to put distance between her estranged husband and herself, but on arrival finds that the company's assets have been frozen and is back where she started. However, at the hotel she meets a man who is a risk analyst of companies in need of inward investment, and he asks her to accompany him to meetings so as to look more impressive...
Review:
A film which strikes a peculiar tone, with its deserted townscapes, trains and hotels, and leaves the viewer unsure as to where it is leading. Everything hinges on an event early in the story which you have shrugged off as unimportant, even though it seems odd at the time, and the main character is prone to strange little spells. But the intrigue of much of the action, together with the clinical ambience of the mise-en-scène, put you off the scent even as you half suspect the truth.
