You've Got Mail (1998)
Country: US
Technical: col 119m
Director: Nora Ephron
Cast: Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Dabney Coleman
Synopsis:
A family run children's bookstore on West Avenue has to confront its new competitor, the multistorey Fox Books, across the street. The embattled Kathleen confides in her new online chatroom friend, who just happens to be... you guessed it.
Review:
Having made over An Affair to Remember as Sleepless in Seattle, Ephron turned her attention to that Christmas classic, The Shop Around the Corner, though the Christmas angle is played down here. It makes for a charmed follow-up, and allows the stars to share more screen time; it is over-extended, however, and too much of the film takes place after giving the upper hand to the Hanks character, which almost becomes sadistic. It would prove the end of an era for Miss Ryan, while Hanks would go from strength to strength, which does not really seem fair since this is Ryan's film.
