(Z ou l'anatomie d'un assassinat politique)

Country: FR/ALG
Technical: col 125m
Director: Costa-Gavras
Cast: Jean-Louis Trintignant, Yves Montand, Irene Papas, Charles Denner

Synopsis:

A left-wing MP visits an unnamed town to address his CND supporters and is murdered by local thugs in the control of the right-wing establishment. The examining magistrate uncovers the truth and charges the guilty but a military coup reverses everything in the end.

Review:

Partly almost surreally comic, mainly nightmarish in its sense of hopelessness, this docu-style political thriller gets up quite a head of suspense and established the stock-in-trade of its director. The title means 'he lives on' in the ancient Greek alphabet.
